“While on duty my husband and another officer answered a domestic call,” explains Sgt. Clay’s wife on YouCaring. “When they arrived they were told by the woman who called that she was arguing with a man and this dog attacked him trying to save her. The man proceeded to stab the dog multiple times.”

The officers knew they had to get the heroic canine help and rushed him to an animal hospital. “I don’t think we could have let that dog suffer and die,” Officer Clay told ABC 7. “We felt like we needed to get that dog some help after what it had been through.”

The dog, now named “Hero” was dying from loss of blood, but the vets were able to save him thanks to the officers’ timely action. When Hero’s story reached the ears of Carla Welch of Fighting For The Bullys she stepped forward to help the officers.

She and several other animal rescuers mobilized to help Hero and raise the funds to pay for Hero’s medical care (he also was diagnosed with heart worm). As the officers couldn’t keep the dog, Carla came to pick him up and take him back to her home in Tennessee.

“I thought he was very courageous and brave. He was totally a stranger to these people,” Carla Welch said.

She says the 7-year-old Pit Bull is laid back and likes people. Since placing him up for adoption, she has received a flood of inquiries. She writes on Facebook, “OMG! Our Inbox is full of inquiries and applications for Hero. I am very overwhelmed with emotion right now!”

Hero’s brave act has certainly earned him a brighter future! Here’s hoping Hero finds the forever home he deserves!

Story Update: September 4, 2016

After several months of being up for adoption, Hero has been welcomed home by Sara and David Simpson, who brought the heroic dog into their home in Tennessee, where he’s getting along great with their two other dogs.

“We are really blessed to be taking this baby and making him family. Adjustments are going well,” Sara Simpson wrote in a Facebook post.

Although Hero appears to have spent most of his life on the streets, Sara told WATE News she’s happy to give Hero a home. “I’m really excited to give someone who’s never had a home, a home, and I say someone because dogs to me are more than just dogs,” she said. “They’re people. They’re your family.”
